Veterinary Ambulance

This dedicated vehicle is kept on-site at Boston Spa, and provides a safe and suitable method to transfer patients between the two practices for particular treatments. Should a home visit be necessary for your pet, and following examination we feel that further care at the surgery is required, they can be transported quickly and efficiently, from your home to the appropriate practice.

Endoscopy

This allows us to look inside your pet's body by using a small camera on a flexible tube. This invaluable piece of equipment enables us to see in the more awkward areas of the body such as the nasal passages, throat, stomach, intestines, bladder and urinary tract, so as to help us identify your pet's condition.

Ultrasound Scanner

By using this device, the vet can see inside the body as it functions, which helps to accurately and quickly diagnosis any problems. Ultrasound is painless and sedation is usually not required.

Ultrasound

Digital X-Ray

This provides excellent quality images of your pets’ skeletal structure should we suspect injuries, for example from a fall or road traffic accident.  It also enables us to see arthritis, chest problems or the rather unusual objects that pets sometimes swallow.  In some cases, sedation of the patient may be necessary depending on the type of x-ray.

Westwood Puppy Parties

Where: Boston Spa practice
Time: 6.15pm until 7pm Cost: Free
Hosted by: Hazel Cothay - Animal Nursing Assistant
Well we don’t have jelly and ice cream, but we certainly do have lots of fun! Social interaction of a young puppy is essential in helping with their development and behaviour. So at our parties, we encourage the little ones to play and mix together to help them mature into happy socialised dogs. For the owners, plenty of informal but informative discussions on caring for your young pet. All puppies from both surgeries are welcome providing they have received the first part of their vaccination course.

Routine Vaccinations

Vaccinating and regular boosters are part of your pet’s routine healthcare, which help to protect your pet against infectious disease. The appointment also gives an opportunity for the vet to carry out a full health check. Happily most pets go home with wet noses and wagging tails, and for the owners peace of mind that their much-loved pet is in good health.
The primary vaccination course can begin at eight weeks old for puppies, and nine weeks for kittens. Protection is also available against Kennel Cough, which we recommend for dogs that attend training classes, are exercised where close contact with other dogs is common, or spend time in boarding kennels.

Routine Healthcare

If you are unsure of which flea, tick or worming product to choose, our nurses and vets are only too happy to discuss, which type would be suitable for your pet and show you how to administer them. Maintaining these regular treatments is so very important, as these irritating parasites can cause major skin irritation and other health problems if not dealt with quickly and effectively.

Dental Care

Bad breath can be a sign that your dog or cat has a dental problem. Decaying teeth and gum disease, may result in tooth loss and further complications. However, prevention is the key, so we provide free regular dental checks with our nurses who can also show you how to clean your pets’ teeth. Regular brushing and care will help avoid the build up of plaque and tartar, which causes oral disease. Should the teeth require de-scaling and a polish to remove plaque, this is quite a routine procedure and can be performed under a general anaesthetic.

Microchipping

It is very sad when a pet goes missing, and devastating to the owner if they are never found. Microchipping is a permanent means of identification that helps to happily reunite lost pets with their owners. A tiny chip, with an I.D. code unique to you and your pet, is injected under their skin and holds details that are stored on a central database, which is accessible 24 hours a day. Scanners are held by various rescue centres, dog wardens and veterinary practices, and used to read the details to identify the lost animal. This service is available at any stage in your pet’s life, and just a routine appointment is required.

PETS Passport

If you are considering taking your pet abroad for the first time, it is easy to prepare and obtain the passport for your pet to travel.  We are here to help you both through the process. You will need to allow 21 days from microchipping and the rabies vaccination before reentry into the UK.  So depending on your own personal plans, please take this into consideration before booking any tickets and embarking on your travels. Contact the surgery for more information or visit www.defra.gov.uk
or click on this link for their passport information. PETS Passport info

Pet Insurance

Modern veterinary medicine now enables us to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. However, treating your pet can sometimes incur expensive procedures, and the last thing you need is the added worry of costs. As accidents and sudden illness can happen to animals when you are least expecting them, you may wish to consider life-long insurance for your pet. There are many policies available, and they are all different, so it is very important to read them thoroughly to see exactly what they include.

One company you may wish to try
is Pet Plan. Just click this link.

Repeat Prescriptions

If your pet is on long-term medication and requires a repeat prescription, a member of staff will be able to assist you. However, we will need to check your animal every three months to ensure their condition is stable, and to ascertain that the type or quantity of prescribed medication is having no adverse effects.

Rabbit Friendly Practice

Hop your pet rabbits along to our practice, where our nurses can give your pet a complete health check, and advise you on nutrition, dental care and keeping nails trim. Protection against infectious disease is very important. Vaccination is available at over six weeks of age for Myxomatosis, which is an unpleasant and distressing virus in rabbits. It causes swellings around the face, eyes, ears, and mouth, affecting their ability to eat, drink and see. Sadly in some cases it can be fatal. Protection can also be given against the Haemorrhagic Viral disease.
